Tour Overview

A supported Afghanistan motorcycle tour on the classic central route — for experienced riders who want the dirt and the history, not a jeep window.

Start and end in Kabul. Ride to Bamyan and the Buddha niches, then the long off-road days through Ghor toward the Minaret of Jam, on to Herat, and north through Maymana to Mazar-e-Sharif before the return to the capital. About 1,500–1,800 km depending on the northern return. Road mix is roughly 70% on-road and 30% off-road on the central block; some days are almost fully dirt, with passes above 3,000 meters.

This is a supported expedition: motorcycle, spare bike, guide, mechanic, support vehicle, hotels or guesthouses as the route allows, and provincial travel permits arranged before you fly. Checkpoints are normal. You carry passport and papers. Do not photograph security posts.

Who it is for: riders with real off-road experience, fit for long days and basic highland rooms. Who it is not for: new licence holders, or guests who want only a paved Kabul cultural week (see our private Kabul week from $1,599 in a 4WD).

Own-bike overlanders with a foreign plate need a separate Road Pass — ask for that variant on the quote.

    Itinerary

    1

    Day 1: Arrival Kabul

    Arrive at Kabul International Airport. Your team meets you and transfers you to the hotel. Afternoon is for rest after the flight. In the evening (or late afternoon if you landed early) we hold a full briefing: the 13-day route, how checkpoints work, riding order with the support vehicle, speed and photography rules, and a final check of visa and paperwork. Bikes are shown and fitted where possible; final handover is confirmed for the morning departure. Overnight Kabul. Meals per booking confirmation.

    Day 2: Kabul to Bamyan (~180 km)

    Leave Kabul after breakfast on the road west toward Bamyan. Expect a mix of paved highway and rough or broken sections, mountain approaches of the Hindu Kush, villages, and several security checkpoints where passport and permits are shown. Riding time is often most of the day once stops are included — plan on a full transfer day, not a short hop. Arrive Bamyan, check in, light walk if daylight remains. Overnight Bamyan. Road: mostly paved with occasional rough stretches.

    Day 3: Bamyan valley

    A non-transfer day for the valley. Visit the Buddha niches and the cliff face where the statues once stood. Depending on time and local registration, continue to Shahr-e Gholghola and/or Shahr-e Zohak. Local culture/tourist registration is often required in Bamyan before site tickets — your guide handles the desk sequence. Afternoon machine check with the mechanic (chain, tyres, bolts) before the harder dirt days. Overnight Bamyan. Easier riding day; more time off the bike at sites.

    Day 4: Band-e-Amir day ride

    Early start for the out-and-back to Band-e-Amir National Park (roughly 1.5–2 hours each way from Bamyan town, longer if checkpoints are slow). Multiple passport/permit checks on this road are common. At the park, pay the entrance on site and spend time at Band-e Haibat and as many of the lake viewpoints as daylight allows. Return to Bamyan the same afternoon. If the park is closed to the group that day (access rules can change), we replace this with a second Bamyan cultural day — we do not force a blocked gate. Overnight Bamyan.

    Day 5: Bamyan to Chaghcharan (~310 km)

    The first big adventure day. Leave Bamyan for Chaghcharan (Firoz Koh area) across remote highland terrain. Expect long unpaved stretches, river valleys, rugged tracks, and high passes above 3,000 meters. This day is slow; distance on the map does not equal hours on asphalt. The support vehicle stays with the group. Overnight in Chaghcharan / Firoz Koh in a basic hotel or guesthouse — facilities are simple compared with Kabul or Herat. Road: approximately 190 km off-road class terrain on the classic central routing.

    Day 6: Chaghcharan to Minaret of Jam (~160 km)

    Continue west through isolated valleys toward the Minaret of Jam, a UNESCO World Heritage brick minaret in a remote canyon setting. The approach is off-road and remote. Visit the minaret area as permits, daylight, and river conditions allow. Overnight near the Jam area in arranged basic accommodation. Road: off-road. Carry patience for slow surface and checkpoint or local stops.

    Day 7: Minaret of Jam to Chesht-e-Sharif (~110 km)

    Ride on from the Jam area toward Chesht-e-Sharif through remote western highland tracks and small settlements. Shorter distance than Day 5, but surface remains rough. Overnight Chesht-e-Sharif in a basic local hotel (expect simple rooms; some stays on this arc are mattress-style or limited ensuite). Road: dirt / mountain track.

    Day 8: Chesht-e-Sharif to Herat (~160 km)

    Continue west as the terrain opens toward Herat. The day transitions from mountain track toward wider valleys and a major city. Arrive Herat, check into a proper city hotel, wash, and rest. Overnight Herat. Road: mostly off-road earlier, improving toward the city.

    Day 9: Herat culture and maintenance

    Full day in Herat without a long transfer. Visit the Friday Mosque, the Citadel, and bazaar areas as open to the group and as local rules allow. Parallel priority: full motorcycle maintenance with the mechanic (oil, filters, fasteners, tyres) before the northern arc. Catch up laundry and sleep. Overnight Herat.

    Day 10: Herat to Qala-e-Naw (~180 km)

    Leave Herat north-east toward Qala-e-Naw. Mixed paved road with uneven and rough sections. Rural scenery and smaller towns. Overnight Qala-e-Naw in simple hotel rooms. Road: paved with bumps and broken patches.

    Day 11: Qala-e-Naw to Maymana (~285 km)

    Longer day with a large off-road share (on the classic routing, on the order of 165 km dirt). Open plains, remote stretches, and mountain tracks. Support vehicle carries luggage so bikes stay lighter. Overnight Maymana. Road: mixed; significant unpaved portion.

    Day 12: Maymana to Mazar-e-Sharif

    Ride east toward Mazar-e-Sharif, a major northern city on the old Silk Road approaches. Surface varies between paved and rough. Arrive Mazar, hotel check-in. Short city orientation if time and energy remain (Blue Mosque exterior / city streets as appropriate for the group). Overnight Mazar-e-Sharif.

    Day 13: Mazar-e-Sharif to Kabul (~425 km)

    The longest transfer day: mountains, valleys, and a return toward the capital highway system. Roughly 100+ km of harder surface is common on this arc before the main roads. This day also absorbs delay from earlier weather or mechanical holds. Evening arrival in Kabul. Final night in Kabul, or airport transfer timed to your flight if the booking is written that way. Overnight Kabul or depart.
